The hydraulic elevator has been the victim of a massive propaganda campaign over the past several years. One of the most important claims being levied against the hydraulic elevator is that it is detrimental to the environment and is likely to cause major problems with groundwater contamination and fish kills and all sorts of ecological nightmares if they are installed. The fact is, many of the claims that are being made are based on data being provided by a large manufacturer and distributor of competing products. So it’s no surprise that we find much of the data being used to support these claims is based on the performance of the least efficient, older versions of the hydraulic elevator as it compares to the sterling performance of it’s brand new competition.
The truth is the hydraulic elevator has evolved quite a bit over the years. Any hydraulic elevator being installed today will include some form of jack protection which has been hugely successful in the attempt to eradicate ground contamination. Furthermore, hydraulic elevators have become quieter, safer, smoother riding and more energy efficient through the use of soft-start technology, high efficiency control valves, permanent magnet motors, and most importantly bio-degradable hydraulic fluids. A new hydraulic elevator installed using biodegradable non-toxic vegetable based hydraulic fluid is even eligible for LEED credits. All of these benefits are available for a fraction of the cost of what you would pay for a light-duty MRL traction elevator.
